Dear Parents
You may have noticed your teen (or tween) looking a little stronger, their hugs just a little squeezier, and their ability to jump onto a door frame and pull out a half dozen chin ups somewhat alarming - especially if they leave fingermarks (no names eh Sylvie, Rohan?). Well, its just not normal growth, the athletic demands of sailing are such that our active kids are getting a great work out in every time they head out on the water.
But what of additional sessions of fitness? As you know, we run "Fitness and Theory" sessions across all our Opti and Youth Squads in Terms 2 and 3, and think it is a valuable part of preparing for the demands of the summer training and racing block ahead. And as the kids get older, there is a place for a carefully thought through and supervised fitness program to supplement the on water work the kids are doing. To that end, the Club is delighted to be putting on a "Strength and Conditioning for Adolescents" Workshop on Sunday 16th May from 0900-1100 hrs, upstairs at the Sailing Club - yes the night after the Presentation Night - have you got your tickets for that btw? .
Details of the free session are set out below ... and don't forget to grab a coffee from the new canteen coffee service on your way upstairs!!
Future Athletic is excited to present "Strength & Conditioning for Adolescents" to all parents, care givers and those interested in this topic on the 16th of May, 9-11am at Hunters Hill Sailing Club.
The presentation will begin at 9am and go for around an hour, we will then take time for questions. The intention of the presentation is to equip you with the latest science and safety recommendations from the experts in training for adolescents.
Future Athletic is founded on a passion to safely develop young athletes physically & mentally, to ensure they have a long and successful career. We understand that the idea of going to the gym or strength & conditioning training can be a grey area when it comes to knowing when your child should begin. That is why we are so excited to bring you all the information you need to know about strength & conditioning for adolescents. From when the appropriate age is to start resistance training, foods to fuel performance, the effect on growth plates and brain health and so much more.
We will have our resident Exercise Physiologist Georgia Amess who completed her bachelor's of Exercise Physiology at Charles Sturt University, and practices at Hunter Rehabilitation and Health with a focus on helping those with musculoskeletal injuries. Georgia also plays in the Womens Premier League for New Lambton Soccer Club and is passionate about young women's involvement in all areas of sport.
We are also privileged to have Dietitian Sarah Jones presenting with us. Sarah graduated from Newcastle University with Bachelor's (Honours) of Nutrition and Dietetics. She practices at Plena Healthcare and Belmont Hospital (NSW Health). She learnt to sail at HHSC and now enjoys supporting & guiding her elite athlete sister, Emma with all her nutritional needs as an athlete.
Finally, we have Emma Jones, the founder of Future Athletic and strength and conditioning coach of HHSC's Sylvie Stannage. Emma is completing her Bachelor's of Exercise & Sport Science at Newcastle University, she is an ASCA Strength & Conditioning Coach and certified in personal training through Fitness Institute Australia. Emma sails a Nacra17 and is part of the NSW Insititute of Sport.
So bring along any questions you have for our panel, we hope you can make it!
If you cannot make the day, please feel free to contact Emma on 0468 468 500 or email in your questions to emma@futureathletic.com.au, she will be more than happy to help answer any questions you have.
